General Info / Access

The theatre is situated in the Gazi area just below Athens Municipality’s Technopolis on Pireos Street. The Gazi area was named after the Athens gaslight factory founded by a French Company in 1857. This place was selected for the construction of this industry due to the importance of its central location at the top of Athens’s “urban triangle”. According to the Kleanthi-Saoumpert proposal of 1833, the Kekropos square was to be built here. Gazi is a classic example of the modernisation of Athens with clubs, restaurants and cultural spaces beginning to appear in the early 90’s and continuing through the Olympic Games in 2004 until today throughout the historical center of the city.
The venue has had a lot of uses. Prior to 1930 it was a grill house and a drugstore, afterwards, a tile-storehouse and, finally, a garage. The Kivotos theatre also operates a children's stage.
